How to do basic pruning of grapes with seeds, both on trellises and on overhead structures.
We will also get instructions and demonstration on rod and spur pruning of seedless grapes.

This is a midweek workshop for people who are not able to attend the weekend workshop.

Morning tea available. Limited places. Donations appreciated.

If you bring your own secateurs please remember to take them back home.

Joe’s Connected Garden – Open Garden 2022

Joes Connected Garden

We will welcome you to our five connected gardens with hundreds of varieties of fruit, as well as herbs, veggies, ducks, chickens, and lots of ideas about urban sustainability.

The event will include:

  • Daily demonstrations and activities include planting, pruning, composting, and wicking beds, as well as advice and talks by gifted speakers and members of the rate Fruit Society. There is a also ‘yellow brick road’ for children to follow.
  • There will be information from local food growing and gardening groups, tea and coffee, sausage sizzle, vegetarian yummies (again!) and unusual fruit trees, and some herb and veg plants for sale at very reasonable prices.

Gates are open from 10:00 to 4:30 pm both days. The program will available closer to the date, on our Facebook page for Joe’s Connected Garden.

Children up to 17 yrs. old enter free (supervised)

Pls. remember gate proceeds will be given to charity.

IBC Wicking bed workshop

Learn how to prepare and fill a wicking bed in a cut-down IBC (international bulk container)

This is a hands-on workshop which includes setting up the reservoir, drainage, wicking material, soil mix and plants. Multiple wicking beds may be linked together, depending on time.

This is an afternoon event and it may be a hot day. Please wear hat and sunscreen. Come prepared to cart soil and get dirty. Please bring gloves and mask.

Preparing the gardens for the Open Garden in March

Moving and spreading mulch, pruning trees and hedges, netting fruit and fixing nets. Other garden-related work as needed.

Please wear hat and sunscreen. Come prepared to get a bit dirty. Please bring gloves and mask.

Light lunch provided after 12:30pm, with lots of opportunity to ask general gardening questions.

Limited to 9 persons due to residential Covid restrictions, unless they change beforehand.

This Food tour will bring us to visit four iconic food locations in McLaren Vale, South Australia.

  • Paxton Biodynamic Winery
  • Willunga Farmers Market (first farmers market in South Australia)
  • Willunga High road, with its small boutique shops and Shirty Lizzard brewery
  • Edible Veggie Garden at Penny’s hills winery

This is a self-driven tour for promoting independent and responsible tourism in South Australia.

Some of these experiences are “not available” to the public, some others are simply local attractions which we will have the opportunity to touch and visit during our stay in McLaren Vale.

All these stops are included in the price of the ticket.

Pls. Check out timing and make sure to have available transportation for the entire length of the tour.

Willunga high road is full of small boutique shops full of interesting locally made ornaments and decorations. Let’s stroll up from the market to the Shifty Lizard Brewery where we will have a chance to taste some of the locally made beers and chill down a bit.   • Introduction of use, growing, harvest, and cooking of the farm gardens veggies.
